What Size Guitar Should a Child Start With?
Choosing a first guitar for a young player can be confusing, particularly when guitars are available in different sizes. Many parents naturally ask: what size guitar for a child is the best choice?
The answer depends mainly on the child's age, height and reach. Choosing an instrument that is comfortable to hold can make those first lessons much easier and more enjoyable.
Why guitar size matters
A guitar that is too large can make learning unnecessarily difficult. A child may struggle to reach around the body of the instrument or stretch their fingers far enough along the fingerboard.
This can affect posture and make simple chords feel much harder than they need to be.
A smaller guitar allows the child to concentrate on learning notes, chords and rhythm rather than fighting against an oversized instrument.
When is a 3/4 size guitar suitable?
A 3/4 size guitar is a popular choice for primary-school-aged children. It has a shorter scale and a smaller body than a standard adult guitar, making it easier for shorter arms and smaller hands to manage.
A 3/4 guitar can be particularly useful for children around 7 to 12 years of age, although age should only be used as a general guide. Children obviously vary considerably in height and arm length.
Axiom's 3/4 size beginner guitar packs are designed specifically for younger players and include the essential accessories needed to get started.
When should a child move to a full-size guitar?
Older children and teenagers will generally be more comfortable with a full-size instrument.
If a child can sit comfortably with the guitar, reach the first fret without stretching and position their fingers easily around the neck, a full-size guitar may be appropriate.
There is usually no benefit in buying an instrument that is deliberately too large on the assumption that the child will eventually grow into it. A comfortable guitar now is more likely to encourage regular practice.
Nylon or steel strings?
Size is not the only consideration when deciding what size guitar for a child to buy.
Many beginner guitar packs for children use nylon strings. Nylon strings feel softer under the fingertips than steel strings and can be a comfortable introduction for a first-time player.
A nylon-string guitar also has a warm, gentle sound and is suitable for learning chords, melodies and basic technique.
Steel-string acoustic guitars produce a brighter sound commonly heard in pop, folk and country music. They can be an excellent choice for an older child who specifically wants that style of instrument.
What about electric guitar?
Children do not have to learn acoustic guitar before starting electric guitar.
If rock or electric guitar music is what inspires your child, an electric guitar may actually encourage them to practise more often.
The important thing is to choose an instrument that is physically comfortable and suits the music the child wants to learn.
Choosing the right first guitar
When considering what size guitar for a child is best, look at the individual player rather than relying entirely on age.
The child should be able to:
-
Hold the guitar comfortably while sitting
-
Reach the lower frets without excessive stretching
-
Place their fingers around the neck comfortably
-
Maintain a relaxed playing position
-
Support the instrument without struggling with its size
A correctly sized instrument makes learning more enjoyable and gives a young guitarist a much better start.
