The short answer

digital piano sustain pedal setup

A sustain pedal tells a compatible digital piano to keep notes sounding after you release the keys. It imitates the damper pedal on an acoustic piano, although the exact response depends on the keyboard and pedal.

Connect the pedal before playing

Check that your digital piano supports a sustain or damper pedal and use a compatible model. With the keyboard switched off, plug the pedal into the correct socket if the manufacturer's instructions recommend doing so. Some keyboards detect pedal polarity at start-up, so avoid holding the pedal down while powering on.

Where should your foot go?

Place the ball of your right foot on the pedal and keep your heel resting on the floor where comfortable. Use a small ankle movement rather than lifting your whole leg. The pedal should sit on a stable, non-slip surface.

When should you press and release it?

For a simple chord change, play the new chord, then briefly release and re-press the pedal just after the change. This clears the previous harmony while allowing the new notes to ring. This technique is often called changing or syncopated pedalling.

Avoid a muddy sound

Holding the pedal continuously through several changing chords can make notes overlap and blur. Practise one chord at a time, listening carefully as you release the pedal. Start with slow chord progressions before adding the pedal to faster pieces.

Try a one-minute practice exercise

Play a C major chord, press the pedal, and lift your fingers while listening to the sustained notes. Release the pedal to stop the sound. Next play C major followed by G major, changing the pedal just after each new chord. Repeat slowly until the sound stays clear.

What if the pedal works backwards?

Some keyboards use different pedal polarity conventions. If notes sustain when the pedal is not pressed, switch the keyboard off and restart without touching the pedal, then consult the manual. If needed, use a pedal with the correct polarity or a supported polarity switch.

Frequently asked question: Will any sustain pedal work?

Not necessarily. Check the digital piano's pedal input and compatibility requirements before purchasing.
