The short answer

eight string acoustic mandolin full instrument

A standard mandolin has eight strings arranged in four closely spaced pairs called courses. You usually fret and pick both strings of a course together, so the instrument behaves in many ways like a four-string instrument.

How is a mandolin tuned?

From the lowest-sounding course to the highest, standard mandolin tuning is G-G, D-D, A-A and E-E. Each pair is normally tuned in unison, meaning both strings of the course play the same note. The intervals between courses are fifths, as on a violin.

Why double the strings?

When two strings sound together, their combined vibration produces a bright, full and projecting tone. Slight natural differences in the strings' motion can add shimmer. The pairs also make rapid repeated picking, known as tremolo, especially effective.

Is it harder to play eight strings?

You do not usually learn eight separate finger positions. Instead, each pair is treated as one course. Beginners may need time to press both strings cleanly and to keep the two strings in each course accurately tuned.

How does it compare with guitar and ukulele?

A typical guitar has six single strings and is commonly tuned in fourths with one major-third interval. A standard ukulele has four strings. A mandolin has four paired courses tuned in fifths, giving it different chord shapes and a distinctive bright attack.

First practice steps

Use a suitable mandolin pick, tune each string of every pair individually, and practise slow downstrokes across one course at a time. Then alternate downstrokes and upstrokes while keeping the wrist relaxed. Check tuning again after playing.

Frequently asked question: Do all mandolins have eight strings?

Eight-string instruments are the most common, but other mandolin-family instruments and variations exist. The familiar standard mandolin uses four pairs.
